David Lantow is an artist that has spent the past 30 years exhibiting and teaching art in New York. He has a BFA from The University of Iowa and a Master of Fine Arts degree from The City University of New York.
I’ve worked in a number of mediums over the years, but printmaking has taken a front seat for now. The depth and breadth of the medium is endlessly challenging and rewarding. Woodcuts have been the playground for my creation lately, along with collage and screenprint. Everything I make starts with an improvisational drawing, finding one from many that has potential and just a bit of magic. From the discovery of an image comes further development, hard work, and the translation into a different medium. Finally, I put a high degree of technical skill in the craft of printing, or getting ink on paper in the most professional way possible.
As far as subject matter goes, the work is not without context as it relates to the exterior or real world. Though not overtly political, it is an expression of conflict, neglect, and addiction.
